About

Open Cards is a free webservice for easy creation of decks, cards and articles about the cards, that is currently available in English, but will be made available in Danish and other languages as soon as our translating module is up and running. Guides for using Open Cards are available to the right of this text.

wwAlthough the interface texts are in English, most of the guides for card design and using Open Cards in educational settings is in Danish. We are aiming at making Open Cards available in as many languages as possible, which is why we are setting up a translation module, that lets users assist us in the translation. First we will see to, that the Danish/English versions are 'harmonized', though.

Open Cards is an offspring of Hazard Cards a card game about technological accidents, aimed at communicating specialist knowledge on risk, society and technology to a wider audience. It is an artistic design project, as well as a research project. The aim is to communicate science in new ways; ways which can shed light on new issues, challenge old beliefs and provoke dialogue.

Since the release of the game in 2004, the Hazard Cards project has evolved from a card game about technological hazards into the open card game creation format Open Cards. Currently this format is being made available for use in schools, as an alternative format for presentations and writing short texts.

Transforming knowledge into games opens for reflection on the relationship between the elements of the subject, embedding deeper what is to be learned. But the classroom is not the only place a card game can be used to communicate complex subjects. The technology we provide facilitates creative presentations in all areas where there is little tradition for popular communication.

Open Cards will be updated with more card designs and new icons from Danish Broadcasting Corporation, early in November.

The Open Cards and Hazard Cards projects are supported financially by the Danish Ministry of Education.
